Why Some Shawls Are Never Woven Twice

Why Some Shawls Are Never Woven Twice

A complex Kani shawl follows a coded pattern (talim) that may not be repeated for years — if ever. Dye batches differ; hand tension varies. Even "similar" pieces are cousins, not clones.

Artisan looms do not replicate

Factories stamp out copies. Master weavers do not. When a piece sells at Soznique, it is gone — we do not reorder identical stock from a catalogue.

For collectors

Document provenance. Store properly. If you are buying for investment as well as wear, prioritise named craft techniques (Kani, fine Sozni) and seller transparency.
